A COMMON MYTH ABOUT HYPNOSIS

It is commonly believed that Hypnotherapists (or Hypnotists) can “make” you do something you don’t want to…or believe something that you don’t agree with. This is a common misconception and I have seen proof that it is NOT true!

A HYPNOTHERAPIST CANNOT MAKE YOU DO SOMETHING, OR BELIEVE SOMETHING, THAT YOU ARE MORALLLY AND FUNDAMENTALLY OPPOSED TO.

lake-and-treesHow do I know this? I have witnessed people change a suggestion that I have given. Find that what I am saying does not resonate with them, their subconscious minds have created an option that works for them. When we use hypnosis to tap into the power of our minds, it is truly amazing.

Another example; I have heard of other therapists that have witnessed the same phenomenon with their clients. For example: A woman who is devoutly religious was in hypnosis and her therapist gave her a suggestion; “You are in control of all aspects of your life.” (This suggestion was intended to aid her in building confidence.) The woman, who is devout in her spiritual belief that there is a Divine Being that controls her life path, replaced this suggestion with “You are confident in the will of God.” Her subconscious mind presented her with the perfect replacement, she felt positive and was very happy to have had this experience. It showed her how powerful her own beliefs and values are. This actually served to build her confidence even more!

We, as therapists, cannot change your morals, values, and strongly held beliefs….unless you want us to!! This is in fact, the whole idea behind changing belief patterns, or habits, with hypnotherapy. By using hypnotherapy to find the cause of the negative belief or pattern, then releasing that cause, we can aid you in finding positive, and lasting, change.

Stage hypnotists (not the same as a Clincial Hypnotherapist, two different professions) can “make” people act like chickens because people AGREE to act like chickens. And fundamentally? They don’t have a moral opposition to clucking like a chicken.
